Our verdict
A snappy role-reversal opener in which the supposedly pathetic stepbrother takes over the shoot. Worth unlocking for fans of bratty leads and power shifts, though the story is slim.
Best for: Fans of bratty leads and power shifts behind the camera
What is My Stepsister Thinks I’m Pathetic about?
His bratty influencer stepsister calls him pathetic — until she needs him to hold the camera, and she is not acting.
My Stepsister Thinks I’m Pathetic review
Mona Newman is the influencer stepsister here, a woman with a sharp tongue and a content habit that is not paying off. Her stepbrother, the man she has written off as pathetic, catches her mid-shoot, and instead of apologizing he tells her exactly why her videos flop. With both parents away at the lake until Sunday, the house is theirs, and the balance of power starts sliding in his direction.
The opening episode is quick and mostly banter. Mona's first instinct is to yell for Dad, and the reminder that he is not home is a nicely deflating beat. The turn comes when the stepbrother dismisses her outfit as cheap and offers to direct, coaching her to play to the lens with far more intent. It is a brisk reversal of the title's premise, and Mona's brattiness gives the scene some bite. The writing is choppy in places, with lines that jump abruptly, but the director-and-star angle is a fresh twist on a familiar stepsister formula.
Episode 2 unlocks with a free account, and 36 tokens covers the final three. The episode closes with her asking whether he plans to just stand there, a direct hook rather than a dramatic one. Fans of bratty leads who get taken down a peg should enjoy where this is headed; viewers who want more story than chemistry may find it slight.
