The Gods Gave Me My Father's Wife review
Prince Theron returns to court to meet his father's new bride and recognizes her instantly: Queen Lysandra, played by Camilla Azarian, is the woman he has been meeting in his dreams. What could have been a straightforward stepmother scenario gets dressed in Greek-tragedy robes, complete with an oracle, a half-told prophecy and a goddess who seems personally invested in the affair. The question isn't just whether they'll give in, but whether they were ever really choosing.
Briskly paced and surprisingly lore-heavy, the two free episodes actually build a world. In the first, an oracle interrupts the royal introduction to warn that the king has brought a serpent into his marriage bed, and gets dragged off by guards for her trouble, a nicely theatrical beat. Episode 2 deepens the mythology with a trip to Aphrodite's chamber, where Lysandra admits she married the king to find the man from her visions. The dialogue is a touch overwrought, as courtly fantasy tends to be, and the dream talk gets openly suggestive, but Lysandra's calm, knowing authority gives the scenes weight.
The episode 2 cliffhanger, the pair sealed inside the goddess's chamber with Lysandra proposing they give the gods what they came to watch, is a strong push toward the three remaining episodes, 36 tokens in all. The synopsis teases discovery, banishment and a twist involving the crown, so the arc has somewhere to go. Fantasy fans and anyone tired of modern-apartment setups should keep going; viewers after contemporary realism should look elsewhere.
