Amanda Langford has an exclusive gala tonight and a husband who, once again, is stuck at work. Rather than walk in alone, she drafts her adult stepson away from his video game, puts him in his father's suit and brings him as her date. Nobody questions it. Soon the whole room assumes they're married, and the hook is how quickly Amanda stops treating that as a misunderstanding and starts treating it as a script.
The first episode is efficient and surprisingly witty. Amanda's answer to his gaming excuse, that there's time for games later but tonight he'll be playing a different part, sets up a lead who's always a step ahead. The gala scene works because she commits to the bit: when a guest asks how long they've been together, she answers without missing a beat, then coaches him with a breezy 'Smile, husband.' His reminder that he's her stepson gets a two-word brush-off. Later she calls out exactly where his eyes kept wandering, and how often. It's teasing and direct rather than subtle, and the stepson's lines are mostly reactions.
