My Girlfriend's Stepmom review
Jake's first day at his girlfriend Chloe's family home comes with a house rule he hears twice before he understands it: nothing is hidden here. Her stepmom, Dana, makes that clear within ten minutes in about the most awkward way possible. The setup in this community-made series is a household several steps ahead of its newest member, with a family tradition, a blindfold and the eventual return of Dana's husband all promised as complications.
The free episodes are tightly written and genuinely funny. Dana is the standout: unflappable, dry and fond of rules she seems to invent on the spot. Her two-minute challenge in episode 2 is the best scene, with rule one stating that nobody touches her until she says so and rule two warning that if Jake keeps looking at her like that, they skip rule one. Chloe plays it as if all this is perfectly normal, which makes Jake's panicked asides land. The script has a clean comic rhythm and leans on suggestion more than explicitness, ending with Jake told he's seen enough for one day.
