Our verdict
A brash military power-play with a strong dominant lead and an unusually long runway; worth it for fans of commanding women, though 216 tokens is a real commitment.
Best for: Fans of strict, commanding women and rank-based power-play
What is Yes Ma'am about?
You're the lowest recruit on base until Sgt. Diana Demont pulls you out of the mud and claims you as hers. She's the untouchable CO married to the Colonel who owns everything — and you're the only one who sees the woman under the uniform.
Yes Ma'am review
Day one of basic training, and the narrator is already in trouble. Sgt. Diana Demont, the platoon's commanding officer, breaks up a scuffle, hands out punishments, and orders him to report to her office. She's feared by every recruit, married to the Colonel who runs the base, and completely off-limits, which is naturally the point. The premise promises an extended power-play romance in which the lowest recruit on base becomes the one person who sees past her uniform.
The two free episodes are blunt and fast. Demont is the best thing here: clipped, scornful and unmistakably in charge, with lines like 'I hate chasing cowards' that establish her in a breath. Episode 2's punishment detail, scrubbing swamp mud off her office floor while she showers next door, is played half as farce, with the recruit's frantic internal monologue ('Play it cool') supplying much of the comedy. That monologue is also the weakness: it's repetitive, and he's mostly a pair of staring eyes. Still, the military setting gives the power dynamic a structure most office or family setups lack.
This is a long one: 20 episodes, with 18 premium episodes after the free pair, 216 tokens in total. That's more than two months of the Premium token allowance, so make sure you like Demont before committing. Her closing summons and promise of a surprise is a decent hook. Fans of dominant women and rank-based power-play should take the plunge; casual viewers may prefer a shorter series.
